Red vinegar-seasoned nigiri and seasonal dishes. A neighborhood sushi restaurant in Tamatsukuri where smiles connect people “Sushi Wagense”

Just a 1-minute walk from JR Tamatsukuri Station, “Sushi Wagense” is marked by a softly lit noren curtain at the end of a narrow alley. The name comes from the Buddhist teaching “Wagense (和顔施),” which means that treating others with a gentle smile is itself an act of giving. We offer red vinegar-seasoned rice and more than 30 types of toppings at all times, with nigiri starting from 150 yen per piece. Seasonal dishes and sake are also available, and we are open until 4:00 AM. From family dinners to a casual drink after work, it is an easy place to stop by. Relaxed and unpretentious in atmosphere, yet fully authentic in taste, we aim to be a neighborhood sushi restaurant that blends naturally into everyday life.

At “Wagense,” the sushi rice is made with red vinegar, known for its mild acidity. It gently complements the fat and umami of fresh fish, enhancing the natural flavor of the seafood itself. With more than 30 types of toppings always available, part of the charm of this neighborhood sushi restaurant is that the chef personally recommends how to enjoy each piece, often saying, “Today, this is the best way to eat it.” Another highlight is the approachable price starting from 150 yen per piece. Relax and enjoy these carefully crafted nigiri without pretense.

A seasonal dish to enjoy alongside nigiri

In winter, steaming hot pots of fugu and giant grouper are served, while in early spring, freshly harvested firefly squid appears in small dishes. Although “Sushi Wagense” is a neighborhood sushi restaurant, it also offers seasonal dishes that highlight the best ingredients of each time of year. From sashimi platters to tempura, there are many side dishes that make you want to reach for your chopsticks between pieces of nigiri. Depending on your preferences and mood of the day, the chef will also guide you to recommended dishes.
